We yawn because our body senses a dip in the oxygen levels in the blood, so your body wants to yawn to take in more oxygen and get it back into the blood stream.
We don't know why yawning can be contagious so, next time you feel a yawn coming on, relax and enjoy the extra jolt of oxygen.
