If you will strengthen your core muscles of your stomach and lift properly, no belt is necessary. You have a natural support belt called abdominal muscles. If your abdominal muscles (core) are strong enough, they'll give you the support your lower back needs. Some studies have shown that lumbar belts are actually detrimental because wearing one means your muscles will weaken and rely on the belt for suport.
In some extreme medical cases, lumbar support belts may be necessary.
